MYSTERY WRITERS OF AMERICA
MID-ATLANTIC CHAPTER
WELCOME!
Welcome to Mystery Writers of America's Mid-Atlantic Chapter. Founded in 2003, we're MWA's newest, and one of the fastest growing, chapters. Our members hale from the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.
Monthly Chapter dinner meetings have featured speakers such as Lawrence Block, Laura Lippman, Katharine Neville and Jeffery Deaver, as well as FBI agents, investigative reporters, forensics experts, film critics and private investigators. Our Chapter has also hosted a dinner cruise, a tour of the Spy Museum, a movie night at a local theater, and co-hosted an event at the Library of Congress. In addition to MWA membership benefits, Mid-Atlantic Chapter members receive Capitol Crimes, the Chapter newsletter, and are eligible to join the Chapter e-mail list.
Mystery Writers of America, Inc. was established in 1945 by a dozen or so like-minded mystery writers for the purpose of promoting and protecting the interests and welfare of mystery writers and to increase the esteem and literary recognition given to the genre. For information on services and how to join, please visit the MWA website or send an e-mail.
MWA:Reads
MWA:Reads is committed to promoting literacy, deductive reasoning and critical thinking skills through its youth literary program. Since its inception, MWA:Reads (formerly Kids Love a Mystery) has involved many authors and thousands of children in the United States. MWA members and members of the public have generously supported the program by donating time, autographed books, and funds.
MWA's Mid-Atlantic Chapter has initiated a variety of projects to help our local region and the surrounding areas. October is Kids Love a Mystery Month, and for two years the Chapter held Halloween costume parties at the Bethesda Writers Center. The Chapter also sponsored a program at an elementary school in New Creek, WV, where each child received their own "forever book" of a new children's mystery.
The Chapter is currently helping with the MWA:Reads Library Initiative program. This program was launched to help financially burdened libraries in the United States. The initial focus on the initiative will be in West Virginia. The libraries targeted in that state will be those in areas where the library book budgets cannot meet the needs of the community.
Persons interested in volunteering to help with MWA:Reads projects should contact MWA:Reads Chair Chris Freeburn at at mwareads@mysterywriters.org.
